02/28/12 - NATIONAL PANCAKE DAY

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, an international non-profit organization that raises funds for children’s hospitals that help 17 million children each year, has set an ambitious goal to raise $2.7 million on February 28, 2011 (National Pancake Day), for children’s hospitals nationwide. Monies raised in your area will stay locally and help save and improve the lives of kids in your neighborhood.
On February 28, IHOP locations nationwide will offer free pancakes to each and every guest with the hope that they will leave a little something behind for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This is the seventh year of this fundraising effort, and we hope to bring the grand total of money raised to about $10 million in just seven years.

NOFA-NH 10th Annual Winter Conference
Saturday, March 3, 2012
Growing Food, Farms and Community

On Saturday, March 3, 2012, the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Hampshire (NOFA-NH) will hold its Tenth Annual Winter Conference, “Growing Food, Farms and Community”. The Conference will be hosted by Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston, NH, from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. “We are very excited to be hosting the event,” says Sanborn Principal Brian Stack.  “We’re looking forward to the opportunity to have our students and faculty participate.”

A sustainable future based on local organic production and growing local economies is the major focus of the Winter Conference. Presenters from New Hampshire and New England will offer their experience and expertise in topics ranging from beginning and advanced organic farming and gardening, organic land care, sustainability, raising livestock, alternative energy, and producing and selling locally.

Cambridge-based eco-activist and author Frances Lappe will be the keynote speaker.   Author of 18 books including Diet for a Small Planet, Ms Lappe is the co-founder of three organizations, including Food First:  The Institute for Food and Development Policy  and, more recently, the Small Planet Institute, a collaborative network for research and popular education seeking to bring democracy to life.

The conference, open to home gardeners and professional growers alike, offers over 40 workshops and lectures.  Topic tracks include Beginner Organic Farmers, Permaculture, Food Safety and Storage, Herbs, Community Gardening and much more.  Scheduled speakers include local experts Dorn Cox (Building Abundance Through Soil Health), Eric and Becky Sideman (Q&A on Organic Vegetables) and Amy Antonoucci (Beginning Beekeeping). Kim Mastrianni will talk about growing sheep organically, while Joe Marquette will present Heritage Fowl for New England. The full program is listed on the NOFA-NH website – www.nofanh.org.

Several authors will be presenting at the conference and doing book signings. In addition to Ms Lappe, the conference will include Chelsea Green authors Didi Emmons (Vegetarian Planet), Michael Phillips (The Apple Grower, The Herbalist’s Way), and Greg Marley (Mushrooms for health: Medical Secrets of Northeastern Fungi).

Plan on strolling through the popular Green Market Fair, where local vendors and farmers market all things organic.  For the first time, there will also be demonstrations and educational presentations in the Green Market Fair.  Our famous Potluck Lunch is also not to be missed, and  attendees who bring an eight-serving potluck dish to share eat for free. An all-day vendor fair plus a raffle will be held from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm in the school gymnasium.

The conference will offer continuing education units to Master Gardeners and NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professionals. Registration materials are available on line at www.nofanh.org and at the NOFA-NH Office (phone 603-224-5022).

NOFA-NH is a non-profit organization of nearly 400 farmers, gardeners, and consumers that actively promotes regenerative and sustainable agricultural practices, ecologically-sound land care, and local, organic food systems. NOFA-NH educates farmers, gardeners, land care providers, and consumers of food on the benefits of natural, organic, and ecological growing practices.

03/20/12 Cub Scout Pack 610 Fundraiser for Pelham High School

Pelham High School is at the cusp of losing it's accreditation. Cub Scout Pack 610 leadership have taken the accreditation report and broke it down into manageable pieces. We are communicating the needs to our community in hope that they will help fund, or have their employers in-kind donations help with the effort. Our Pack is focusing our efforts on the Science Department. Parental members of our pack are writing grants for equipments and we are engaging the boys in meaningful ways to help raise the funds needed to get the department to pass and check off one item off that accreditation report. Our rough estimates put that number at $16,000. To date, we've raised $4,000 in our combined efforts. The boys are hosting a fund-raiser for the Science Department: Pelham McDonald's Tuesday, March 20th 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Boys / Families will be selling raffle tickets for donated baskets to help with the Pelham High School Science Department. Raffle basket; WOW do we have some FANTASTIC BASKETS SHAPING UP. How about a Day Spa experience to an AWARD WINNING SPA? Hand tied fishing flies from a NH native so prominent for his work that he has been asked by US Presidents and world dignitaries for his flies. But wait.. there will be more..........

RED CROSS STORM SAFETY

Scattered outages are possible during any significant weather event, and the condition of the roads has the potential to delay restoration efforts should they occur.” Unitil Media Relations Manager said. “Local utilities will work quickly and efficiently to restore power, but it important for all households and businesses to remain ‘Red Cross Ready’ throughout the winter months.”

Unitil and the American Red Cross urge customers to take precautions with the approach of this major winter storm.

Check power meters and vents.
Remove snow and ice carefully from a meter or outdoor appliance vent carefully with a broom. Do not use a shovel as it can damage the meter. Avoid shoveling or plowing snow up against or covering the meter or pipe. Remove icicles from overhead eaves and gutters to assure dripping water does not freeze the meter or vent pipe. Contact a qualified roofing vendor if you cannot reach icicles yourself. Do not kick your gas meter in an attempt to break ice off, as this too can cause damage.

Keep food as safe as possible.
Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. First use perishable food from the refrigerator. An unopened refrigerator will keep foods cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. If it looks like the power outage will continue beyond a day, prepare a cooler with ice for your freezer items.

Turn off and unplug all unnecessary electrical equipment, including sensitive electronics.
Turn off or disconnect any appliances (like stoves), equipment or electronics you were using when the power went out. When power comes back on, surges or spikes can damage equipment. Leave one light turned on so you’ll know when the power comes back on.

Eliminate unnecessary travel, especially by car.
Traffic lights may be out and roads will be congested. Not only are you putting yourself and others at risk for injury, but accidents can damage utility poles and add hours to any ongoing restoration effort.

Using generators safely.
When using a portable generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Do not connect a portable generator to a home’s electrical system. Make sure that the generator you purchase is rated for the power that you think you will need.

Do not touch any electrical power lines.
Keep your family away from power lines. Report downed power lines to the appropriate officials in your area.

Carbon Monoxide Kills!
The primary hazards to avoid when using alternate sources for electricity, heating or cooking are carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire. Never use a generator, grill, camp stove or other gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace or any partially enclosed area. Locate unit away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door.
